Environmental
Degradation
Some
of the key factors associated with environmental degradation are:
·
Population and Poverty
·
Urbanization and Industrialization
A complex
relationship exists between population growth, environment and health.
Increasing population leads to intensified human activities, which
in turn lead to resource depletion and environmental damage.
In
India population living in urban areas is growing day by day and
due to absence of good public transport, the number of vehicles
has increased exponentially, leading to deteriorating environmental
condition. Due to limited resources and lack of infrastructure facilities,
large percentage of urban population are forced to live in slums
and shanty towns without basic amenities like safe drinking water,
sanitation and sewage disposal.
Exposure
to Chemicals
Industrialization
is central to the development but in the absence of appropriate
technology and environmental safeguards, industry becomes a major
source of air and water pollution, hazardous chemicals and noise.
A large variety of toxic chemicals such as dyes and co lour chemicals,
pesticides, petrochemicals, metals etc. used in industrial operation
can cause acute and chronic health effects in exposed workers and
near by populations.
Environmental
chemicals are also a matter of growing concern. Every year thousands
of chemicals introduce in market and enter in various environmental
media like air, water, food and soil. For example presence of arsenic
and fluoride in water, persistent pesticides in food and heavy metals
in air and soil are likely to cause toxicity in vulnerable groups
like children and pregnant women.
